What Is Borderlands 4?
For those new to the series, Borderlands is best described as a “looter shooter.” Players explore strange alien worlds filled with bizarre enemies, battle through waves of foes, and collect an ever-expanding arsenal of weapons. Each weapon can be unique, with effects ranging from elemental blasts to guns that fire projectiles in chaotic and often comedic ways. The cycle is simple yet addictive: fight, loot, upgrade, repeat.
Borderlands 4 keeps this formula intact but introduces significant changes. Instead of segmented levels, the game is set in a true open world on the planet Chyros. Players can now freely explore four diverse regions, filled with side quests, hidden puzzles, timed activities, and collectibles. Exploration is supported by new tools such as a grappling hook, glider, and a summonable vehicle, giving players multiple ways to traverse the environment.

Combat and Gameplay Evolution
Combat remains at the heart of Borderlands, but Borderlands 4 brings major upgrades. Movement is now far more dynamic, with players able to double jump, dash, swim, glide, and grapple across battlefields. These mechanics make fights faster and more fluid than ever before.
The game also introduces a wide range of new enemies, from crystal-covered beasts that require precise targeting to mechanical creatures that deflect bullets. Boss battles have evolved, too, often incorporating unique mechanics that require players to adapt beyond simple “shoot until it dies” encounters.
Loot remains the star of the show. Weapons now include cross-manufacturer combinations, allowing for even stranger and more powerful effects. For example, a shotgun might spray elemental projectiles across the battlefield, or a sniper rifle might fire continuously like a Gatling gun.
Meet the Vault Hunters
Players choose from a new cast of Vault Hunters, each with unique skill trees and playstyles:
- Vex (The Siren) – masters elemental magic and life-stealing abilities.
- Rafa (Exo Soldier) – deploys digistructed weapons, from turrets to armblades.
- Harlo (Gravitar) – manipulates gravity to trap enemies or control the battlefield.
- Aman (Forge Knight) – a cybernetic warrior with powerful melee-focused skills.
Each Vault Hunter has three distinct skill trees, allowing players to customize their playstyle. Teams of up to four can combine different builds to create powerful synergies during cooperative play.
Story and Setting
The narrative of Borderlands 4 centers on liberating Planet Chyros, a hostile world divided into multiple regions. Along the way, players encounter new allies like the charismatic Levane, while old favorites such as Claptrap make their return with plenty of comic relief. The tone is slightly more grounded than previous entries, but it still retains the series’ trademark humor and eccentricity.
Completing the main story can take around 40 hours, with numerous distractions and side activities adding dozens more. Even after the credits roll, players can dive into higher world-tier difficulties and endgame activities designed to test their builds and teamwork.
Endgame and Replay Value
As with past entries, the endgame is designed to keep players invested. Weekly challenges include modified story missions, repeatable boss encounters, and rotating vendors that sell legendary loot. Higher difficulty tiers add modifiers to enemies, such as elemental absorption or black hole effects on death, ensuring that even familiar foes feel dangerous in new ways.
Co-op and Online Play
Borderlands 4 supports solo play but is built with co-op in mind. Teams of up to four Vault Hunters can take on missions, explore Chyros, and tackle bosses together. However, the game currently faces some technical issues in online play, with occasional bugs, desyncs, and performance hiccups. Despite these, the cooperative chaos of blasting through hordes of enemies with friends remains a defining part of the Borderlands experience.
Why Borderlands 4 Stands Out
By moving to an open-world design, introducing expanded movement options, and refreshing both combat and loot systems, Borderlands 4 offers the most ambitious take on the franchise yet. It keeps the looter shooter DNA intact while giving players new freedom to explore, experiment, and strategize in their hunt for legendary gear.
For newcomers, Borderlands 4 is an accessible entry point into the series. For veterans, it is a bold step forward that reshapes how the chaotic world of Borderlands can be experienced.
