What’s New in 2025? A Format Built for Uncertainty
This year’s edition isn’t just a repeat — it’s a reimagined battleground. In response to an ongoing evaluation of previously promoted teams G2 Esports and 2GAME Esports, Riot Games has introduced a new tournament structure with more teams, a new play-in phase, and enhanced competitive layers.
The updated format allows for eight teams instead of six, and includes a Play-In phase, which will activate under specific conditions:
- If one or zero invited teams (G2 and 2GAME) return to defend their spot, the third seeds from Brazil (BR), Latin America (LATAM), and North America (NA) Challengers Leagues will clash in a single round-robin.
- The winner(s) of this play-in will earn a spot in the main event.
Following that, the main event enters a Swiss format, featuring:
- Six Challenger League teams (Top 2 from BR, LATAM, and NA)
- Plus the advancing team(s) from the Play-In
All matches in the Swiss phase will be best-of-three, with the top four teams advancing to the Playoffs.
Double Elimination Showdown in the Playoffs
The final four teams will fight through a double-elimination bracket, maintaining the high-stakes nature of the event:
- All matches remain best-of-three.
- The Lower Bracket Final and Grand Final will elevate the pressure even further with best-of-five showdowns.
The new format ensures teams must not only be consistent but also adaptable and resilient — especially if they fall to the lower bracket.
Promotion on the Line: G2 and 2GAME Under Evaluation
At the heart of the tournament’s evolution is the uncertain future of G2 Esports and 2GAME Esports, the two teams that earned promotion through past Ascension tournaments. Their current status in VCT Americas is under review based on competitive performance.
- G2 Esports, currently one of the top three teams in VCT Americas and the winner of Stage 1, is expected to retain its VCT slot due to strong international showings and consistent results.
- 2GAME Esports, however, faces a tougher road. The team has struggled in 2025, finishing in the bottom half of both the Kickoff and Stage 1. If 2GAME is relegated, it may need to re-enter Ascension and fight to reclaim its spot.
This evaluation process introduces a layer of unpredictability to the event: the number of available promotion spots in VCT Americas may vary, depending on the outcome.
The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever
For aspiring Tier 2 teams, VALORANT Ascension Americas 2025 is more than a tournament — it’s a career-defining opportunity. With VCT promotion spots hanging in the balance, top-tier competition, and a restructured format that rewards consistency and endurance, São Paulo is set to host one of the most thrilling esports events of the year.
Ticket details and specific dates are still to be announced, but one thing is clear: every match could change the course of a team’s future.
