Getting Started: The Basics
R.E.P.O. is an online co-op horror game where you and up to five teammates must explore dangerous environments, collect loot, and extract it to complete objectives. When you first join a lobby, you’ll be thrown straight into level one. Your journey begins inside the Repo Van, where you’ll find two monitors. One shows your current level, while the other displays messages from the “Tax Man,” who communicates using emojis.
Health and Energy
- Your health is displayed in the top left corner, and your energy is located beside it.
- Energy is consumed when sprinting but regenerates automatically when you stop moving.
- It’s important to monitor your energy since you’ll need it to outrun enemies.
Looting and Extraction
Your primary objective is simple: find loot, bring it to the extraction site, and leave. The loot can be found in various locations around the map, such as high, low, under furniture, inside lockers, and cabinets. Always check around thoroughly.
- Small Items: You can place small items in your cart for easy transportation.
- Big Items: Some items may be too heavy to carry alone. You will need extra help from your teammates to carry them or can push them with your body.
- Item Management: Be careful! Dropping or hitting loot against objects decreases its value and can break it entirely. To avoid mistakes, make sure to carefully move items into the cart.
Pro Tip: For small items, use your scroll wheel to adjust the distance between you and the item. Push it carefully, or it could break.
Enemies and Combat
As you loot, you’ll encounter various enemies, each with unique behaviors. Some enemies chase you, some pull you, and others target your loot. It’s crucial to stay alert and follow these combat tips:
Combat Tips:
- Crouch: Always crouch when you encounter an enemy to make it harder for them to spot you.
- Hide: Hide underneath furniture like chairs and tables to avoid detection.
- Killing Enemies: Grenades and explosive mines are effective tools for dealing with enemies. Alternatively, you can use objects around the map to swing and hit enemies.
Shrinking and Tumble Launching:
- Press Q to shrink into objects, allowing teammates to pick you up, move you, and even use you as a weapon.
- You can also launch yourself towards enemies by sprinting, jumping, and shrinking into an object at the right moment.
Reviving Teammates:
If a teammate dies, they’ll drop their head. To revive them, simply carry their head to an extraction site. When you complete the level, your teammate will be revived.
Service Station: Gear Up and Progress
After each level, you’ll visit the Service Station, where you can buy health packs, skill upgrades, and weapons. Here are some key things to keep in mind:
Buying Tips:
- Skill Upgrades: Consider purchasing stamina upgrades early, as they’re relatively cheap and offer a significant improvement to your movement.
- Weapons: Weapons such as stuns, grenades, and melee weapons can be invaluable. The shop inventory is randomly generated, so buy useful items when you see them. Prices will increase as you progress.
The Green Orb:
After completing the last extraction, you’ll return to the Repo Van where the green orb will heal each player by 25 HP. Make sure to heal your teammates before you walk inside, as it provides a nice bonus.
Game Progression: Higher Levels, More Challenges
As you progress to higher levels, you’ll face bigger maps, higher quotas, and more extraction sites. Each extraction site can only be used once, so be prepared to find and activate new ones.
Mini Map:
- The mini map is an essential tool for navigation. It shows which rooms you’ve explored, where loot and extraction sites are located, and helps guide you back to the Repo Van.
- Always keep an eye on the mini map, especially after completing an extraction site, as it will show you the fastest route back to the van.
Handling Multiple Extraction Sites:
- In higher levels, there may be multiple extraction sites on the map. Once you complete one, it will be destroyed, and you’ll need to find another one. Keep exploring and activating them until you reach your quota.
Pro Tip: Listen carefully for extraction points. They make a distinct ping sound every few seconds and can be heard through walls.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
While playing R.E.P.O., you’re bound to make some mistakes, but don’t worry — we’ve got you covered!
1. Not Checking the Mini Map:
Many beginners forget to use the mini map, but it’s essential for guiding your exploration and helping you find extraction points and loot. Make sure you’re checking it frequently.
2. Dropping Loot Carelessly:
Be extra careful when moving loot. If you drop an item incorrectly or hit it against something, you’ll lose its value or break it. Always try to use your scroll wheel or push items carefully.
3. Overlooking the Shrink Mechanic:
Shrinking into objects is a useful tool for navigating tight spaces, getting around enemies, and helping your teammates. Don’t forget to use it to your advantage!
4. Not Healing Your Teammates:
Remember to heal your teammates when you can, especially before entering the Repo Van. The green orb provides a valuable health boost.
5. Ignoring Enemies:
Some enemies might be blocking your path or extracting loot. If an enemy is in the way, don’t just rush past. Use the environment, your teammates, or even shrink yourself to sneak around them.
Final Tips
- Tumble Launching: You can launch yourself at enemies for quick damage by sprinting, jumping, and shrinking into objects. It’s a great way to hurt enemies or quickly get to a safe spot.
- Rechargeable Items: Items like the frying pan, shotgun, and drones are a one-time purchase, and they’ll stay with you for the rest of the game. Make sure to grab these early as their prices increase with each level.
Now that you have a solid understanding of R.E.P.O.’s mechanics, it’s time to dive into the game and start your co-op adventure! Remember to stay alert, work as a team, and make use of all the tools and strategies available. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!
