In Hell Is Us, combat is not just about swinging your weapon and hoping for the best. One of the most powerful systems available to players is the Glyph system, which unlocks unique Lymbic abilities that can completely change the flow of a battle. Glyphs allow you to cast devastating spells, manipulate your enemies, and gain powerful advantages that make even the toughest encounters manageable. But how exactly do they work, and how do you use them to their full potential? Let’s break it down step by step.

What Are Glyphs?

Glyphs are equippable items that grant your character Lymbic abilities. Think of them as spell-like powers tied directly to the emotional essence of the world: Rage, Grief, Terror, Ecstasy, and Neutral. Each Glyph you attach to your weapon unlocks a unique ability that you can activate during combat, giving you more tools to survive and dominate.

How to Get Glyphs

Glyphs aren’t just handed to you—you’ll need to work for them. Throughout the ruined nation of Hadea, Glyphs can be found through several methods:
- Completing Mysteries – side quests that often tie into the lore of the land.
- Completing Secrets – hidden challenges tucked away in the environment.
- Exploring Vaults of Forbidden Knowledge – dangerous dungeons full of puzzles and enemies.
- Closing Timeloops – eliminating corrupted zones trapped in cycles of tragedy.
- Occasionally in specific locations – scattered across the world for keen-eyed explorers.
The deeper you dig into Hadea’s mysteries, the more Glyphs you’ll uncover—making exploration and puzzle-solving essential if you want to unlock their full potential.
How to Equip Glyphs

Once you’ve earned a Glyph, it goes straight into your Inventory, which you can access from your in-game tablet. From there:
- Navigate to the Loadout tab.
- Hover over one of your two weapon slots.
- You’ll see an option at the bottom of the screen to either “Add Glyphs” or “Manage Glyphs.”
Selecting this will open a new menu where you can attach Glyphs to your weapon.
⚠️ Important: Weapons have specific Lymbic Sphere assignments. This means that a weapon can only equip Glyphs of the same Lymbic type—or Neutral Glyphs that are compatible with any sphere.
This adds a layer of strategy when building your loadout, since not every weapon can use every Glyph.

Types of Glyphs
Glyphs are categorized by emotional properties, directly mirroring the types of Hazes you’ll face in the game:
- Rage (Red) – Abilities tied to fury and aggression.
- Grief (Blue) – Defensive and restorative powers tied to sorrow.
- Terror (Green) – Fear-based abilities that can debilitate foes.
- Ecstasy (Yellow) – Energy-driven powers with chaotic effects.
- Neutral (White) – Universal Glyphs that can be used with any weapon.
Knowing which type of Glyph to use—and when—can make a massive difference in combat.
How to Use Glyphs in Combat

Once you’ve equipped Glyphs, they appear in the bottom-left of your HUD in a D-Pad formation. Each slot corresponds to a Glyph you’ve equipped.
Here’s how to use them:
- Hold L2 (PlayStation) / LT (Xbox)
- Press the face button (Square/X, Triangle/Y, etc.) linked to the Glyph
The selected Glyph’s ability will immediately activate. After use, the Glyph enters a cooldown state.
To track cooldowns, watch for the grey circular timer that wraps around the Glyph’s icon. Once it completes the circle, the Glyph is ready to use again.
Why Glyphs Matter
Without Glyphs, combat in Hell Is Us can feel punishing—especially against Hazes and other supernatural threats. By learning how to acquire, equip, and strategically use Glyphs, you gain far more control over fights. They give you:
- Extra offensive firepower
- Emergency defensive options
- Tactical control abilities
- More flexibility when facing different enemy types
Mastering Glyphs is about more than just pressing buttons—it’s about understanding your weapon, your Lymbic Sphere, and the enemy you’re facing.
Final Thoughts
Glyphs are one of the most important mechanics in Hell Is Us, blending seamlessly into the game’s themes of emotion and survival. Whether you’re unleashing Rage to cut through waves of enemies, channeling Grief to protect yourself, or experimenting with Neutral Glyphs for versatility, they’re your key to mastering combat in Hadea.
So next time you’re preparing to dive into a fight, don’t just sharpen your blade—equip the right Glyphs and let your emotions fuel your victory.
