When I first booted up Spectre Divide, I anticipated another run-of-the-mill team-based competitive shooter. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the game’s unique features and novel approach. Here’s a quick review and how you can join the beta.
Art Style:
Spectre Divide’s cel-shaded art style immediately grabs attention. Unlike most FPS games, the clean and bright shadowing makes the environment visually appealing without overwhelming the player. The only minor issue is the sometimes indistinct orange outlines on enemies, which can be easily addressed before the official launch.
Gameplay Mechanics:
Spectre Divide is a 3v3 tactical shooter that introduces a unique mechanic called Duality. Players control two characters simultaneously, known as Spectres. You can fully customize both yourself and your Spectre, creating a personalized gameplay experience. The game’s standout feature is the ability to use a puck to relocate your Spectre, allowing for strategic repositioning and enhanced gameplay dynamics.
Sponsors and Abilities:
Spectre Divide offers various sponsors that equip you and your Spectre with different sets of tech and abilities, enhancing the tactical depth. Currently, there are eight sponsors, each offering unique kits ranging from assault to healing support.
Weapon System:
The weapon system in Spectre Divide is familiar but with a twist. Weapons come in sets of two, one for you and one for your Spectre. This system encourages strategic planning and offers a fresh take on the traditional weapon mechanics found in other tactical shooters.
Gameplay Experience:
Matches in Spectre Divide are intense and require strategic planning. Whether you’re defending or assaulting bomb sites, the dual-body mechanic keeps you engaged. The game’s competitive nature, combined with the freedom of movement and shooting accuracy, provides a refreshing experience.
How to Join the Beta
Excited to try Spectre Divide? Here’s how you can join the beta:
- Add Spectre Divide to your Steam Wishlist: Head over to the game’s Steam page and add it to your wishlist.
- Request Access: Click on “Request Access” on the game’s Steam page.
- Check Your Email: If you’re selected, you’ll receive an invite via email.
- Download the Playtest: Follow the instructions in the email to download the game’s playtest.
The initial playtest begins on August 3rd, from 12 PM to 8 PM PST. Although this session has reached its cap of 10,000 players, there will be future closed betas. Keep an eye out for announcements to secure your spot.
