The popular geography-based browser game GeoGuessr has officially launched its Steam Edition, expanding its availability beyond browsers for the first time. Released on May 8, 2025, the new Steam version introduces the game to a broader audience on PC platforms. For those unfamiliar with the title, GeoGuessr challenges players to identify real-world locations using Google Street View images, relying on visual clues such as landscapes, languages, architecture, and signs to determine where in the world they’ve been dropped.

What Is GeoGuessr Steam Edition?
GeoGuessr Steam Edition is a standalone client available on Steam. It retains the core gameplay of the browser version but currently focuses primarily on the Duels format. This includes:
- Standard Duels
- No Move Duels (where players can’t move from the initial location)
- NPZ Duels (No Pan or Zoom modes, increasing difficulty)
Players can challenge others in 1v1 matchups and view global leaderboards. The Steam version also features Steam integration, allowing players to connect with friends, view friend activity, and invite them to unranked 2v2 games for free.
Access and Subscriptions
The game is free to download on Steam, but access to features is limited without a paid subscription. Users who already have an active Elite Yearly or Unlimited Yearly GeoGuessr subscription can link their accounts to unlock the full Steam edition.
New users can still try the game for free, but free access is restricted. For example, the free plan limits the number of games that can be played daily. After a certain number of duels or map interactions, players will encounter a paywall, encouraging them to subscribe.
There are currently three main subscription tiers:
- Basic Plan – Offers extremely limited access (e.g., 5 minutes of gameplay every 15 minutes).
- Unlimited Plan – Full access to maps and modes.
- Elite Plan – Includes additional cosmetics and priority features.
Note: The Steam subscription does not carry over to the browser version and vice versa unless the account is properly linked.
Interface and Performance
Players who have tried both the browser and Steam versions report that the Steam client runs more smoothly, with improved animations and minimap interactions. This could potentially benefit competitive players who rely on fluid gameplay and quick reactions.
Player Feedback
Initial community feedback has been mixed. While the performance of the Steam version is generally well-received, many players express concerns over the subscription model and the limited features available for free. As of launch day, Steam user reviews reflected a low approval rating, with only about 14% of players leaving positive feedback. Some reviewers questioned the decision to sell a separate Steam version that currently offers fewer features than the well-established browser version.
Conclusion
GeoGuessr Steam Edition marks a significant shift for the popular map-guessing game, aiming to reach new audiences and enhance performance through a dedicated PC client. However, access is currently restricted without a premium subscription, and several features from the browser version are not yet available in the Steam client. Players interested in trying it out can do so for free, but should be aware of potential limitations after a few games.
Whether this version will evolve into a fully featured standalone experience or remain a niche alternative to the browser version remains to be seen.
