A Story Set Years After the Raccoon City Outbreak
The events of the game take place several decades after the 1998 disaster known as the Raccoon City outbreak. The narrative begins with Grace Ashcraftoft, a young FBI analyst tasked with investigating a series of mysterious deaths among survivors connected to that tragedy.
Grace’s investigation initially leads her to search through a grim, abandoned hotel while examining evidence related to the unusual deaths. However, her investigation quickly turns into a dangerous situation when she encounters the game’s primary antagonist, Victor Gideon.
Gideon captures Grace and traps her inside the Roadsill Chronic Care Center, a sinister sanatorium that functions as a large labyrinth filled with locked doors, puzzles, and hostile creatures.

Two Playable Characters
The story unfolds through two playable characters.
Grace Ashcraftoft
Grace is the main new character introduced in this installment. As an inexperienced FBI analyst, she begins her journey struggling to survive the horrors surrounding her. Her gameplay sections emphasize stealth, survival, and resource management.
Players must move carefully through the dark corridors of the hospital while avoiding dangerous enemies that stalk the environment. Ammunition is scarce, inventory space is limited, and Grace moves slowly, making each encounter potentially dangerous.
Her sections often involve:
- Stealth movement through hostile areas
- Solving environmental puzzles and locked-door riddles
- Managing limited supplies and ammunition
- Avoiding powerful enemies that appear suddenly
These segments focus heavily on tension and exploration.
Leon S. Kennedy
Helping Grace during the story is returning series character Leon S. Kennedy, one of the franchise’s long-time protagonists.
Leon’s mission is to rescue Grace and investigate the crisis connected to Gideon and the sanatorium. Unlike Grace’s stealth-focused gameplay, Leon’s sections emphasize combat and action.
When players control Leon, the game shifts to a third-person perspective and features more intense battles against large groups of enemies.
His gameplay includes:
- Using a wide range of weapons such as shotguns and sniper rifles
- Performing finishing moves against enemies
- Picking up and throwing weapons dropped by defeated foes
- Facing major boss encounters throughout the story
Leon can even use weapons found during combat, such as fire axes or pipes, throwing them at nearby enemies.
Gameplay Structure
The campaign lasts roughly 10 hours and alternates between Grace and Leon at specific points in the story.
The two characters offer very different gameplay styles:
- Grace’s sections focus on stealth, survival mechanics, and exploration inside dangerous environments.
- Leon’s sections feature faster combat sequences and large-scale fights against enemy groups.
This structure allows the game to move between slower survival horror moments and more action-driven gameplay.
Enemies and Zombies
The creatures encountered in the game are infected by the T‑Virus, which has appeared throughout the Resident Evil series.
Unlike earlier versions of zombies seen during the Raccoon City outbreak, the enemies in Requiem display more unusual behaviors. Some retain fragments of their former personalities and can interact with their surroundings in unexpected ways.
Players may encounter enemies that:
- Wander through rooms muttering or laughing
- Interact with environmental objects such as light switches
- Suddenly collapse and feed on corpses nearby
These behaviors contribute to the unpredictable atmosphere within the game’s environments.
Crafting and Resource Mechanics
Grace also has access to a unique tool known as a blood collector. This device allows her to gather infected blood from defeated enemies.
The collected material can then be combined with other scrap items to craft useful resources, including:
- Medkits for healing
- Hemolytic injectors, single-use tools that can be used as stealth attacks against enemies
A hemolytic injector can be inserted into an unaware zombie, causing the creature to swell and explode. It can also be used to permanently dispose of bodies, preventing certain enemies from reanimating later.
Boss Encounters
Large-scale boss battles occur primarily during Leon’s gameplay sections. These encounters include both newly introduced monsters and reimagined threats from earlier stories in the series.
Some boss fights involve targeting glowing weak points on large enemies while managing additional threats, such as nearby zombies that may mutate during the battle.
Locations
The story begins in the Roadsill Chronic Care Center, a maze-like medical facility filled with corridors, basements, locked doors, and hidden passages.
As the narrative progresses, the setting expands beyond the hospital into other areas connected to the remains of Raccoon City, linking the new story with the broader history of the Resident Evil universe.
Players also discover notes, documents, and reports scattered throughout the environment. Some provide clues about the mystery surrounding Grace’s capture and the events connected to the Umbrella Corporation.
A New Entry in the Resident Evil Timeline
Resident Evil Requiem combines multiple elements from previous games in the franchise, including survival horror exploration, puzzle solving, combat sequences, and boss encounters.
By introducing a new protagonist while also bringing back Leon S. Kennedy, the game expands the ongoing storyline connected to the aftermath of the Raccoon City outbreak and the legacy of the Umbrella Corporation.
With its release on February 27, 2026, the title represents the newest chapter in Capcom’s long-running survival horror series and continues the evolving narrative of the Resident Evil universe.
